Polished limestone takes the surface further, buffing it to a glossy, reflective plane that deepens and enriches the stone’s natural colour. It is an elegant choice for refined interiors, fireplace surrounds, feature walls, and flooring in low-traffic formal spaces. Outdoors, polish tends to soften with weathering, so we generally recommend it for protected or interior applications.
The Textured Finishes: Bush-Hammered, Flamed, and Sandblasted
If you desire a rustic, structured surface, bush-hammered limestone is the way to go. A carbide-tipped hammer head leaves a pattern of small, uniform impressions across the face, producing pronounced relief and excellent grip. It’s a natural fit for plinths, exterior stairs, and ground-level courses that take real wear.
Flamed limestone is thermally treated: intense heat causes the surface crystals to burst, leaving a naturally rough, slip-resistant texture with plenty of character. For a surface with character and grip, flamed pool surrounds, terraces, and exterior paving are often the most practical of all limestone finishes.
Sandblasted limestone has a subtly roughened, uniform matte grain. Among limestone finishes it sits between honed and bush-hammered on the texture spectrum: enough tooth to diffuse light and hide fingerprints, but restrained enough for modern architecture. It’s a popular choice for large cladding fields where you want texture without visual noise.
The Character Finishes: Brushed and Antique

Lastly, antique finish limestone exudes a timeless, weathered charm. Tumbling and brushing mellow the surface and soften the edges, recalling European masonry that has stood for centuries.
